For our newbies out there, the CrossFit Open consists of 5 workouts spread across 5 weeks with the aim to find the fittest people in the world. This season, its a bit different with only 3 weeks open to the entire world, and additional workouts later for those that qualify. Last year over 230,000 people participated in the Open. This is a big deal in the CrossFit world, and for anyone who does CrossFit, it kind of comes with the territory.
For the official and more detailed description of what the “Open” is, check out this article from the CrossFit Games site:
I know many of you will ask yourself, “Why should I do the Open? There’s no way I’m the fittest in the world.” For 99.99% of us, that is true and finding the fittest is only a small part of what its really about. For us, its about camaraderie, community and FUN. That’s why we are running the CFC Intramural Open! In the Intramural Open, you’ll have the ability to contribute to a team every single week no matter how well you do in the workout. Go above and beyond in your spirit or performance and you can contribute even more. Most importantly, it’ll be the highlight of fun and community in our gym.
So what exactly is the Intramural Open? It all starts with you registering for our Intramural Open by signing up on the white board at the gym. As registrations roll in, we will divide everyone up into 4 teams, captained by some of our most seasoned CrossFit veterans. Once teams are set and workouts begin, it’s quite simple. You earn a point for your team by simply doing the workout and submitting your score. If you place top 3 in your division for a workout, then you earn additional points. If your team brings the most spirit in any given week then your team receives extra points. So, say you aren’t the best athlete in the gym. No big deal. Complete the workout and bring tons of spirit and you might make the biggest point contribution in the gym! Folks, it’s totally normal to be a little nervous. But then again, you were all super nervous the first time you walked through our doors and you know how well that worked out. So make the leap, trust in us, and get ready for an amazing time!
New folks – YES, you should sign up. We’ll be right there to help you along the way. Years from now, you’ll look back and remember your “First Open”, don’t miss the opportunity to make a benchmark for yourself NOW.
Folks coming from other gyms – YES you should sign up. Did you have a bad experience before? Was it super competitive ? Was its super “Kumbaya” and everyone got points for costumes and whatnot? Our Open is different, give it a shot.
Competitors – YES, you should sign up. You train to be competitive in the sport of CrossFit, don’t watch from the sidelines when the time comes to prove your fitness.
Additional info about The Open at CFC
Participation: $20 – gets you a team tee shirt, goes toward prizes for the winning team. If you opt in , you’ll be billed through WODIFY – no need to bring cash or Venmo anyone.
Signing up officially for the CrossFit Games is your choice and is not required to be part of the in house fun! I highly encourage you to sign-up, its a great way to chart your fitness journey and compete with friends from other gyms and locations.
The open will be hosted at all class times on Fridays from March 12th through the 26th. All members are encouraged to make classes on Friday whenever possible. There will be no re-dos or make-ups without permission from a coach. In the past this has been a huge disruption to our class flow.
If you need to complete the Open outside of Friday class times, please contact us, we will do our best to make accommodations for you, but don’t assume that the Forge is a Free-for-all of Open testing. We have various offerings happening in the Forge at all times and will need to coordinate them to prevent capacity issues and space problems.
Members on CFC Competitor Track and members with custom programming, hybrid and private client memberships, please contact your coach for accommodations as needed.
